Where Did the Pink Come From?
Pink has been associated with breast cancer awareness for so long now – almost 30 years – that it is an easily recognizable symbol for the campaign to raise awareness and encourage more women to do self-checks, but it wasn’t always that way.
Evelyn Lauder, the daughter-in-law of famed cosmetics queen Estée Lauder and a breast cancer survivor, is largely credited with creating the first pink ribbons. Self magazine had asked her to serve as guest editor of their first-ever?Breast Cancer Awareness Month issue and, working with the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Alexandra Penney, the idea was born. Those signature pink ribbons were distributed at Estee Lauder counters across the country and around the world along with self-exam instruction cards.?
